Actress Viola Davis has said she was a bit “judgemental” about her colleague and late actor, Chadwick Boseman, while working with him on set, not knowing he was battling a health condition at the time.
In a recent interview with The Times, she recalled seeing her co-star being taken care of by his fiancé, Taylor Simone Ledward, and his makeup artist, and wondered the reason behind the special treatment.

Ms Davis and Mr Bossman worked on the movie Black Bottom, the actor’s final film before his death in August 2020. Chadwick had been battling colon cancer since 2016 and kept it private until his passing at age 43.
The Woman King actress explained that she had been puzzled seeing Chadwick’s assistants playing music for him and giving him back rubs while on set.

“There was a part of me that was a little judgmental — why do you need all that…Little did I know that they were doing it because he was dying,” she stated.
Viola Davis’ work with Chadwick Bossman was released after his death and earned a posthumous Oscar nomination for the Black Panther talent.

On the fourth anniversary of his death, Viola Davis posted a tribute on her social media, praising Chadwick’s exceptional talent.
“Authenticity, passion and love were all woven in one extraordinary human….Chadwick Boseman!..You live on in me. Your flame will never be extinguished,” she wrote.

In August 2024, Actress Lupita Nyong’o paid tribute to her Black Panther co-star, Boseman, stating she continued to “grieve” over the loss.
In a post on Instagram, on Wednesday, August 28, she shared a black-and-white photo of Chadwick and another old, colourful shot of herself laughing together with the late actor.

She added the quote: “Grief never ends. But it changes…It is a passage, not a place to stay. Grief is not a sign of weakness or a lack of faith. It’s the price of love,” before adding: “Remembering Chadwick Boseman. Forever.”
