Fans of Grammy winner Tyla should not be surprised when they see her collaborate with American singer and actress Janet Jackson sometime in the future.
Speaking in a recent interview on MTV, Tyla named Janet Jackson as one of the many personalities who gave feedback on her mega-hit record Water, adding that she is “a big Janet Janet Jackson fan” and a collaboration with her is “very possible.”
The 22-year-old touched on aspects of her musical journey, explaining that her debut Tyla album, released last month, had about 130 songs before it was narrowed down to 14 tracks.
“It was kind of hard because my heart was literally screaming out these songs…It is difficult narrowing your babies down but the way the album came together was the perfect story,” she stated.
Asked about her mood before the 2024 Grammy Award night, Tyla said she felt “a sense of peace” the whole day, and it was probably God telling her she was going to win.
She expressed both shock and gratitude at her success throughout the years but said she was “taking everything easy” as and when they occurred.
“All these opportunities coming my way is just crazy and I know a lot of people are also confused because they are wondering where did this girl come from?…I’m just shocked and just trying to take everything, be grateful and just loving the moment,” she noted.
Tyla said she would have been a model or mining engineer if she were not a musician. The talented African act had previously released several singles but came to the limelight with her Water composition, which won the Best African Performance award at the 2024 Grammys.
According to her, Water was “an amazing song” but she did not know it would become a worldwide hit. The sensational singer added that different genres influence her style of music, and that explains why she likes to “mix things up in her music.”
She stated that she had “grown a lot” in her music career and had become “more comfortable” working with other people.
“Back then I did not want anyone in the studio, I just wanted to be myself; even the producer, I would want him not to see me…I was very much to myself, and as the years went by, I learned more, and I have become more open,” the Truth or Dare singer added.
Asked about her favourite selection on her new Tyla album, she mentioned Breath Me as the song that showcased her “vocal and lyrical abilities more,” adding that she was impressed with bringing artistes from diverse backgrounds onto the album.
