Trey Songz is pushing back after a Nevada court issued an $11 million default judgment against him for allegedly failing to respond to a battery lawsuit filed by police officer Tyrelle Dunn.
The case, stemming from a 2021 incident in Las Vegas, has now taken a new turn as the singer seeks to overturn the judgment.
Dunn filed the lawsuit in 2023, claiming his wife was assaulted in Songz’s hotel room at The Cosmopolitan. He alleged that his wife’s phone was taken away when she tried to leave the room.
According to Dunn, he rushed to help after hearing her cries and was attacked, suffering injuries that kept him off duty for a month.
The court issued the default judgment on October 10, 2024, awarding Dunn $11,277,961.37 after Songz reportedly failed to respond to the suit.
However, the singer’s legal team is now challenging the ruling, arguing that he was never served with the lawsuit and only learned about it through media reports.
In a recent legal filing, Songz’s team stated that the service of process did not comply with Nevada or California laws.
They argued that Dunn served the guards at Songz’s gated community rather than the singer himself, making the service invalid. Songz’s attorneys also emphasized that he promptly hired legal counsel upon learning of the case and filed a motion to set aside the judgment.
The legal filing further pointed out that a thorough investigation conducted by the Las Vegas Police Department cleared Songz of any criminal wrongdoing.
The investigation concluded in 2022, with authorities finding insufficient evidence to support the claims and highlighting inconsistencies in witness testimony.
Songz’s legal team expressed confidence that he should be able to defend himself in court rather than face what they described as an unjust and life-altering judgment. They also noted that enforcing the judgment would devastate the singer’s career and personal life.
