Travis Scott, one of the most influential figures in modern hip hop, is set to be honored with the prestigious ‘I Am Hip Hop’ award at the 2024 BET Hip Hop Awards. The announcement came from BET on Tuesday, October 1, just days ahead of the highly anticipated annual event.
The Houston-born rapper and producer, known for his boundary-pushing music and high-energy performances, will receive the award during the ceremony on October 8. The event, taking place in Las Vegas for the first time, will air on October 15 at 8 p.m. local time. This year marks another milestone for BET’s celebration of hip-hop culture, with Fat Joe returning to host for a third consecutive year.
Travis Scott has firmly cemented his place in hip-hop with his innovative sound, massive influence, and unforgettable live shows. As one of the genre’s leading trendsetters, he continues to shape music, fashion, art, and culture.
BET’s Connie Orlando, Executive Vice President of specials, music programming, and strategy, emphasized Scott’s significance in hip-hop and beyond. She praised the rapper for his creative vision and relentless passion, noting his ability to captivate audiences and push the genre in exciting new directions.
The ‘I Am Hip Hop’ award has previously been bestowed upon some of the industry’s biggest legends, including Lil Wayne, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, and LL Cool J. Last year, Marley Marl took home the honor, further highlighting the prestigious nature of this accolade.
In addition to receiving the award, Scott is set to perform at the 2024 BET Hip Hop Awards, where he’s also nominated in six categories. His hit single “FE!N” is up for Song of the Year, continuing what has already been a stellar year for the artist.
Scott’s momentum doesn’t stop there. Last month, he achieved his fourth No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with Days Before Rodeo, a mixtape he released a decade ago. Thanks to unprecedented vinyl sales, the project made a historic surge to the top of the charts, earning 156,000 equivalent units in its fourth week.
