Travis Scott is kicking off 2025 with controversy. Roc Nation artist Victory Boyd is filing a federal lawsuit in New York, accusing him of unauthorized use of her song in his 2023 track, Telekinesis, a collaboration with SZA and Future.
Boyd claims she wrote the original song, Like The Way It Sounds, in November 2019 and shared it with Kanye West.
According to the suit, West played the track for Scott, who allegedly passed it on to SZA and Future, resulting in the creation of ‘Telekinesis.’ The lawsuit alleges the song’s hook contains lyrics directly copied from Boyd’s work.
Adding to the dispute, Swiss luxury watchmaker Audemars Piguet is also named in the lawsuit. Boyd accuses the company of using ‘Telekinesis’ in an advertisement despite her explicit refusal to grant permission.
In a twist, Boyd is credited as a composer on ‘Telekinesis’ on Spotify. She argues this acknowledgment came directly from Scott and his collaborators. The suit also claims she was offered an eight percent share in the song, further fueling her argument.
Currently, representatives for Roc Nation and the involved parties have not responded to requests for comment.
Despite these legal troubles, Travis Scott is gearing up for what promises to be a groundbreaking performance at the 2025 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. The Utopia rapper will headline the Saturday night slots on April 12 and 19, delivering an immersive experience near the Sonora Tent.
Paul Tollett, president of Coachella’s parent company Goldenvoice, has hinted at the scale of Scott’s plans. He described the performance as one of the most significant in the festival’s history, emphasizing the unique, exploratory nature of the experience Scott is curating.
