In a tragic news this week, Tamayo Perry, a surf instructor and actor who played a role in Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, has been reported dead following a shark attack.
The 49-year-old was said to be surfing off the Hawaiian Island of Oahu when he was attacked by a shark and brought to shore by a jet ski.
His death was confirmed by Honolulu’s emergency services Sunday afternoon at a press conference.
According to news reports, emergency services arrived at Malaekahana Beach, north of Oahu, around 1 pm local time, after a caller reported a man suffering from wounds that looked like shark bites.
Sources said, Perry was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene after being brought to shore.
Acting Honolulu Ocean Safety Chief, Kurt Lager, described Perry as “a lifeguard loved by all.” He said Tamayo’s personality was “infectious, and as much as people loved him, he loved everyone else more.”
“Our condolences go out to Tamayo’s family,” he added.
“Tamayo was a legendary waterman and highly respected…he grew up right over here, and was just a great member of our ocean safety team.” Mayor Rick Blangiardi, another officer said and called Perry’s passing “a tragic loss”.
Tamayo Perry acted alongside other top talents and played the role of a buccaneer (a pirate who attacks ships except that of his nation) in the fourth film in the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise, which came out in 2011.
Perry has also starred in movies including Blue Crush, Hawaii Five-0, and Lost and Full Throttle.
Perry and his wife Emilia set up the Oahu Surfing Experience, a surf school “dedicated to providing a safe, educational and purely enjoyable experience that most big surf schools will not be able to offer.”
“When I’m not acting, I’m still quite a character, so there’s always a ton of fun to be had.” Perry wrote on his website about his surfing experience and knowledge, and his acting appearances.
“The vast amounts of ocean knowledge that Tamayo has ingrained in me over the years is priceless,” his wife Emilia wrote in a bio about her husband.
