Rapper Stormzy has been banned from driving for nine months after being caught using a mobile phone behind the wheel of his £275,000 Rolls Royce Wraith.
The 31-year-old musician, whose real name is Michael Ebenezer Owuo Jr, pleaded guilty to the offence through a letter submitted to Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court.
The Guardian reported that the incident occurred on March 7, 2024, when an off-duty police officer spotted the rapper using his phone while driving on Addison Road in West Kensington. The officer approached the vehicle and advised Stormzy to address the car’s heavily tinted windows and stop using his phone while driving.
During the hearing, the court highlighted the severity of the case, adding six points to Stormzy’s already troubled driving record. This brought his total points to 15, leading to an automatic disqualification. The court also imposed a fine of £2,010, which included penalties for previous offences involving another high-value vehicle.
In a separate case last year, Stormzy admitted to driving a £200,000 Lamborghini Urus with illegally tinted windows. The car’s front windows allowed only 4% light transmission, significantly below the legal requirement of 70%. Prosecutors described the vehicle’s condition as dangerous, particularly to vulnerable road users.
Defending Stormzy, his legal representative acknowledged the offences and confirmed that the tinted windows on his vehicles had since been removed. Despite this, the court expressed concerns over the rapper’s driving history, branding his actions as dangerous and irresponsible.
The judge emphasized the need for accountability, referencing the repeated warnings and offences linked to the musician’s luxury vehicles. Alongside the driving ban, Stormzy was ordered to pay the fine within seven days.
