The all-new Shrek 5 film, scheduled to be released in early 2026, has been pushed back to December 2026.
DreamWorks and Universal Pictures’ project is an animated movie starring Eddie Murphy, Mike Myers, and Cameron Diaz. It was originally slated to be released in theaters on July 1, 2026.
The new December 2026 release was announced recently; however, they did not really mention the reason behind the decision.
The movie will have Walt Dohrn, who previously worked as a writer and actor on the second and third movies and was Head of Story on the fourth, direct Shrek 5.
Brad Ableson worked as co-director, Gina Shay also returns to produce alongside Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri.
Shrek 5 will be bringing back Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz to reprise the roles of Donkey and Princess Fiona, which will be released 16 years after the fourth film, Shrek Forever After.
The news about the new Shrek was previously confirmed by Murphy in an interview where he revealed that the work on Shrek Forever After has begun.
This revelation was made during an interview with Collider, where the 63-year-old comedian stated:
“We started doing Shrek four or five months ago. I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year. We’ll finish it up.”
Eddie Murphy also stated that his character Donkey would also get a spin-off movie.
Shrek is an animated comedy fantasy franchise that is based on William Steig’s picture book for children of the same name.
The new sequel will be coming out 16 years after the fourth animated franchise installment.
The making of Shrek 5 was also confirmed by Meledandri, the founder of Illumination, in 2024.
When he discussed the film and admitted he was hopeful of getting the original cast back together.
He told Variety at the time that, “We anticipate the cast coming back. Talks are starting now, and every indication that we’ve gotten is there’s tremendous enthusiasm on behalf of the actors to return.”
