This year’s Billboard Music Awards came off successfully with some top stars taking the spotlight at the event. It was to celebrate the artists who performed exceptionally on the music chart in 2023.
Shaboozey, SZA, Tyla, and Drake were some of the names who stole the spotlight as they were decorated at the MGM Garden in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Others, like country music stars Zach Bryan and Taylor Swift, were at the top of the list and also left with some awards. The likes of Kendrick Lamar, Beyoncé, Tyla, Travis Scott, and Chris Brown also added some trophies to their award shelves.
Last week, GloRilla was crowned the Hottest Female Rapper by Billboard, solidifying her place as one of the top acts in the rap game.
The publication unveiled its year-end list on Wednesday, December 4, ranking the top 10 women in hip-hop, with GloRilla leading the pack. Following her in the top spots were Megan Thee Stallion, Nicki Minaj, Sexyy Red, and Latto, among others.
GloRilla’s breakout reportedly came with the release of Yeah Glo at the beginning of 2024. The track soared into the top 30 of the Billboard Hot 100, showcasing her determination and resilience.
Other collaborations and chart-topping singles, including Wanna Be with Megan Thee Stallion and the summer anthem TGIF, also kept her in the spotlight.
Last year, Afrobeats giant Burna Boy took home the Top Afrobeats Artiste award at the Billboard Music Awards (BBMA) and dedicated the honors to all African musicians producing irresistible sounds on the continent.
Expressing gratitude, he said the future of the industry remains bright, and the world should wait for the “bigger vision.”
Last year’s ceremony, held on Sunday, November 19, 2023, also crowned Rema and Selena Gomez’s Calmdown(remix) as the best Afrobeats song.
Calmdown (Remix) spent over 69 weeks on the chart, reaching number No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topping many charts in different countries.
Inspiring acts including Ayra Starr, Victony, and Labianca also came close to winning, as they were all nominated in the newly created BBMA Afrobeats category, but Burna Boy and Rema were the favorites.
