Dancehall legend, Sean Paul, has spoken about the next stage of his career, saying he does not intend to retire anytime soon.

Speaking in a recent interview, he described dancehall as “a son of reggae and a brother of hip-hop, a cousin of reggaeton and a cousin of afrobeats”.

“It [dancehall] is a mixture of music and, like our people in the Caribbean, very spicy. I’m proud of it and I’m glad to be someone who brings forth some of the new stuff,” he stated.

The Kingston-born deejay said his mission throughout his career was to “emulate the big music he heard from Bob Marley, Shabba Ranks, and other top reggae performers and “add to what they gave him”.

Many artists have sampled Sean Paul’s instrumentals in their songs. Commenting on the phenomenon, the talented act said it was “dope” to see dancehall re-emerge into the circles of pop music.

He praised musician Ice Spice and commended everybody who loved dancehall and reggae culture and may want to sample the rhythm.

“It just proves that people like me, people like [fellow dancehall pioneers]…We have potency in what we do and look up to everybody else who has contributed to the genre. Beenie Man, Bounty Killer – all the greats, big up,” he noted.

When asked when he would retire, the 51-year-old said he would not retire until he was “dead like a tyre”. He, however, agreed that it was becoming hard to jump on stage due to his age, but said doing that sometimes kept him “youthful.”

“I read a thing that if you go to two concerts or two festivals every month, you gon’ gain nine years on your life so, I’m gonna live forever!” he joked.

The Temperature hitmaker considers live performances and concerts as “awesome”, saying it was “a synergy and a gathering of like-minded people who want to party and have fun, and forget the stresses of their present life.”

Sean Paul revealed that he had new upcoming music and had been in music production also while “getting to see the next side of the business”.

In April this year, Sean Paul was recruited on the remix of Can’t Get Enough, released by Jennifer Lopez.  Jennifer Lopes announced on her social media with snippets of the recording, which was released on April 5, 2024.
