Rihanna’s 2005 hit single Pon de Replay has now reached 700 million streams on Spotify, as of Friday, March 15, 2024. A monitoring outlet that is not officially affiliated with Spotify said the song is Rihanna’s 19th single to attain that milestone.
Pon de Replay is a creole translated as “Put on the replay.” It was Rihanna asking the DJ to play her song again and louder. It was the official single from her debut studio album, Music of the Sun (2005).
Comprising a heavy-sounding Caribbean rhythm, the song made many waves across nations and remains one of the biggest club bangers of all time. The sound has both American and Caribbean influences, as the singer introduces her dexterity and rich vocals on the beat.
The melody reportedly pushed Rihanna’s to the Billboard Top 10 in 2005, and several songwriters are credited for its success. The song was one of three songs recorded by Rihanna as a demo for her record label.
It received certifications in many countries, including two-time platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America on December 19, 2012, and was praised for its in-depth composition.
Topping charts in New Zealand and other countries, the single reached number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and the UK Singles Chart in its peak years. The song also reached top-five positions in countries including Austria, Belgium, Denmark, and Switzerland.
Refreshing as it sounds, the melody reportedly spent a total of 12 weeks on the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100, and 23 weeks on the chart in total by July 30, 2005.
The official music video for Pon de Replay has also reached 226 million views on YouTube as of March 15, 2024.
