Rap legend Flavor Flav has claimed that the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, Mary J. Blige, 53, has a similar writing style to Pop Princess, Taylor Swift, 34.

In January 2024, the legendary hypeman for the iconic rap group Public Enemy spoke about the R&B icon during his interview with HOT 97’s ‘Ebro in the Morning.’

During his sit-down, the 65-year-old clock-wearing legend compared MJB and T-Swift

He explained that Mary just like Taylor writes about the experiences she goes through in life, then when she gets up there on that stage, and she sings those songs, mostly every single woman in that audience relates.

Since Flavor Flav’s comparison, Mary J. Blige didn’t disagree with his opinion. While recently speaking with PEOPLE, MJB noted that her and T-Swift’s writing style is “kind of similar.”

She told the publication, “I mean, I love Taylor Swift. She sings about what’s going on in her life. It’s kind of similar because she definitely gives you a piece of a relationship in a minute and whatever she may be dealing with. And that’s just her therapy. That’s just her way of expressing herself through her song, and people relate. It’s definitely kind of the same thing. I use my music as my therapy and a way to escape, or a way to express myself and just say how I’m feeling. What else are we going to do?”

Before Flavor Flav’s comparison of Mary J. Blige and Taylor Swift, the two performed together in 2015. At the time, T-Swift was on her ‘The 1989 World Tour‘ and during her Los Angeles, CA stop, she invited MJB as her special guest.

Additionally, Flav is a big Swiftie (Taylor Swift fan). Ever since he attended her Detroit, MI stop of her Eras Tour last year, Flav has become more of a fan – the reason he spoke so intensely about his deep appreciation for her songwriting skills with HOT 97.
