Singer Maria Carey is grieving the loss of two close relatives. A representative for artiste told some outlets that the Always Be My Baby composer lost her mother, Patricia, and sister, Alison, on the same day last weekend.

“My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend…Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day,” the legendary singer-songwriter said in a statement.

“I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed. I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time,” she added. The cause of death was not stated.

Mariah previously spoke about her “complicated relationship” with her mother in her 2020 memoir, titled The Meaning of Mariah Carey, indicating, among other things, that her mother and father, Alfred Roy Carey, divorced when she was three years old.

“Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities…It’s never been only black-and-white — it’s been a whole rainbow of emotions,” she wrote in the memoir.

“Our relationship is a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment. A complicated love tethers my heart to my mother’s,” she added.

She, however, mentioned that despite their differences, Patricia “did her best” in raising her, and other siblings. In the write-up, Mariah’s relationship with her sister was also said to be “very complicated.”

As of January 6, 2024, All I Want for Christmas Is You by the American singer reached the No. 1 position in the 18th week on the Billboard Global 200 chart. The 1994 holiday hit held the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Global Excl. US chart for a record-tying 13th week.
