After what seemed to be a hibernation from the music scene, Cameroonian singer Labianca has returned with a fresh tune titled God’s People.
The Afro-soul musician announced the advocacy or campaign song on Thursday, saying she wants to raise funds for victims of the Anglophone crisis in Cameroon.
“If you want to help the Anglophones, listen to this song on any platform. I’ve released God’s People everywhere to raise funds from my stream profits to help victims of the #anglophonecrisis in Cameroon…You would be joining me to support some people in my country! #freecameroon,” she wrote on her timeline.
The Anglophone crisis is a protracted conflict between the government and separatists from the English-speaking minority in Cameroon. It started in 2017 and has reportedly killed over 6,000 people. Some 765,000 people are said to have been displaced, with the majority seeking refuge in neighbouring Nigeria.
Reports indicated that about half the population of the four million people in the Anglophone region need humanitarian support. The number includes about 600,000 children who have been deprived of effective schooling because of the conflict.
The worrying situation is the reason Labianca wants to embark on a humanitarian mission with the release of the brand-new single. It is unclear how much revenue she intends to mobilise for the outreach. Some of her followers have welcomed the new single and expressed support for the initiative.
In December 2023, Labianca announced her debut Extended Play (EP) titled: Walk Away. It had tunes with themes revolving around love, heartbreak, pain, and progression.
Her chart-topping single People, released in 2022, stemmed from her personal experiences dealing with a rare mood disorder known as cyclothymia.
Libianca Kenzonkinboum Fonji, shortened as Liabianca won the BET Award for People and rose to fame within a short period after the emotional single went viral.
The track reached No. 2 on the US Billboard Afrobeats Chart and No. 1 on the UK Afrobeats Chart. It also peaked at No. 2 in the UK Official Chart and received wide attention across social media. Her discography includes Level, My Place, Revenge, Thank You, Special, and Lovin.
