John Legend has called out Kanye West for what he described as antisemitic and anti-Black behaviour.
In an interview with The Times, the singer said West has changed drastically over the years. He said the man he once worked with was creative and full of hope, but has now become obsessed with harmful ideas and divisive views.
Legend believes the turning point came in 2007 after the death of West’s mother, Donda. He said West was never the same after that and began to change in ways that have only gotten worse with time. He said:
“He had so much optimism, so much creativity. I didn’t see a hint of what we’re seeing now, his obsessions with antisemitism, anti-Blackness, and it is sad to see his devolution.”

Their friendship also began to fall apart in 2020 when Legend refused to support West’s presidential campaign. He backed Joe Biden instead. Legend said West was deeply upset by this and it created a major strain in their relationship.
West has also spoken publicly about the fallout. In an interview on the Drink Champs podcast, he accused both Legend and Big Sean of turning against him during his campaign. He claimed they were used by the Democratic Party to criticise him, despite how much he had helped their careers.
Big Sean, another former GOOD Music artist, has also had issues with West. The rapper once said that signing Big Sean was the worst decision he ever made. This came as a shock to many, as West had long supported Sean’s rise in the music industry.

Over the years, several people who were once close to West have distanced themselves. Many say his behaviour has become more unpredictable and harmful, especially when it comes to politics and public statements.
Legend said he hopes things can change, but added that it’s up to West to take responsibility for his actions.
