Jay Rock In Trouble For Alleged Illegal Possession Of Firearm

Rapper, Jay Rock, has reportedly been arrested for alleged illegal possession of a firearm.

Some outlets indicate that he was initially stopped by law enforcement officers in Los Angeles on Thursday, March 13, 2025, on suspicion of public drinking and trespassing.

The incident was said to have occurred at a place near the Watts public housing complex where the musician grew up.

Rock, known officially as Johnny Reed McKinzie, was said to have fled from his vehicle, after he was stopped by local authorities but was quickly caught up with by the police and detained.

Sources close to the event said further investigation of Rock’s vehicle led to the discovery of a machine gun in the car.

That, reportedly, led to his booking on suspicion of violating California law, which prohibited persons from previous convictions from possessing a firearm.

Records indicate that Jay Rock was previously arrested in 2009 as the prime suspect in a shooting in the Watts neighborhood but was later cleared. Nonetheless, he was still detained for several outstanding warrants, according to officials.

It is unclear if the rapper would be processed for court, following the recent arrest.

Jay Rock, signed to Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE), is best known for his collaborations with Kendrick Lamar including the 2018 hit King’s Dead.

King’s Dead appeared on his third studio album Redemption, and featured on the Black Panther soundtrack, which was curated by Kendrick Lamar.

In 2019, Jay Rock won Best Rap Performance alongside Kendrick Lamar, James Blake, and Future for the same song.

According to records, King’s Dead became Jay Rock’s first song to chart on the US Billboard Hot 100. On May 16, 2018, he released the single Win, which served as the second single from his third studio album.

Apart from his solo career, Jay Rock is also known as a member of the now-defunct hip-hop supergroup Black Hippy, alongside fellow West Coast rappers and TDE labelmates Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, and Ab-Soul.
