As the feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar continues to draw attention from music fans all over the world, J. Cole, who has worked with both artistes, has expressed fond memories of his work with the Compton rapper.
On the fourth episode of his limited audio series podcast Inevitable, J. Cole played two songs he recorded with Kendrick in 2010, titled “Shock the World,” which features BJ the Chicago Kid, and “Temptation.”
Per a report by Billboard, on the Tuesday, November 26th show, Cole recounted meeting Kendrick at the 2010 XXL Magazine cover shoot, where the Dreamville Records co-founder was photographed alongside other rappers, including Top Dawg Entertainment artist, Jay Rock. Cole and Kendrick, who reconnected at a party for rap group U-N-I, stayed in contact, and Cole would soon send him beats.

According to J. Cole, ‘when I played them for him, I was like, ‘Bro, you can have these if you want.’ I remember he said, and it always stuck with me ’cause I had never heard nobody say this to me before, he was looking at me like, ‘N***a, are you sure you want to give me these?!’ “I’m like, ‘Yeah, go ahead, take them.’ He was like, ‘Bro, you sleeping on yourself.’
He went on to add that it struck him because it was the stone-cold truth of his reality at that time. He adds that he was so focused on getting this unicorn hit for his album that he was actually sleeping on what he did well.
Both songs were played during an in-store appearance, as seen above. Kendrick would release “HiiiPoWeR” as a single from his 2011 project, Section.80. Also, on Tuesday, it was announced that the next installment of Dreamville Festival will be held from April 5-6, 2025, at Dorothea Dix Park in Raleigh, North Carolina.
