Movie director, Mario Van Peebles, has opened up about how Whoopi Goldberg bagged a role in a movie after stomping out of her house to complain about noisy activity on her street.

Speaking to Page Six, Van Peebles revealed that he was “directing a show on the [Hulu drama] Wu-Tang: An American Saga in New Jersey, and this neighbor came over all irate yelling, ‘Who is making all that racket,’ and it was Whoopi.”

When she realized he was the director, he asked her what she wanted to do next, and she responded by saying she was interested in doing a Western movie. She goes ahead to ask him if he knows who Stagecoach Mary is, to which he replies in the affirmative.

In the movie, Goldberg plays Stagecoach Mary, a mail carrier who became the first Black woman to be employed as a major route postwoman in the United States. Van Peebles revealed that Goldberg was paid for the role.

“She did not do it for free. I still had to pay her and I would not want her to do it for free, but she did it for the right reasons. I have my own rule when it comes to casting for a movie: No matter who or what the person is… if we were all at camp and we were twelve years old, would I wanna play with you? If the answer is yes — ‘She will be fun to play with! — then, yes, you are in the movie.”

A private screening was held at Regal Union Square Theatre on Thursday, February 29, 2024, where Charlamagne Tha God hosted a Q&A after the film with Peebles.

In attendance were Whoopi Goldberg, French Montana, and Joey Bada$$, with Neal McDonough, Edward James Olmos, Cedric The Entertainer, Cam Gigandet, DC Young Fly and John Carroll Lynch all starring in the film.

In other news, Whoopi Goldberg has disclosed the existence of a covert intelligence branch within The View’s operations.

In a recent discussion on the popular talk show, Goldberg and Joy Behar discussed the detrimental effects of gossip within the entertainment industry, and the 68-year-old actress confessed to leaking fake gossip to weed out a mole behind the scenes.
