Gunna Named As A Crips Gang Member In YSL Trial

BY JO Mensah January 23, 2024 10:56 PM EDT

Gunna, a popular Atlanta rapper and associate of Young Thug, has been exposed as a member of the Crips gang by a co-defendant in the ongoing RICO case against Young Thug and his YSL label.

The revelation came during the cross-examination of Trontavious “Slug” Stephens, who claims to be a co-founder of YSL (Young Slime Life), a rap collective and alleged criminal organization.

Stephens, who pleaded guilty to several charges and agreed to cooperate with the prosecution, was asked by one of the prosecutors if there were any Crips affiliated with YSL, which is said to be a subset of the Bloods gang. Stephens answered affirmatively and then confirmed that Gunna was one of them.

This is not the first time that Gunna’s alleged gang ties have come under scrutiny.

In 2022, he was arrested along with Young Thug and several others in a sweeping RICO indictment that accused them of being part of a violent street gang that committed crimes ranging from murder to drug trafficking.

Gunna was denied bond partly because of his supposed connection to the Shady Park Crips in Atlanta. However, his lawyer denied that he was involved in any gang activity and said that he was only a musician.

Gunna, whose real name is Sergio Kitchens, is a Grammy-nominated rapper who has collaborated with artists such as Drake, Travis Scott, Lil Baby, and Future. He is also signed to Young Thug’s YSL Records, which is an imprint of 300 Entertainment. He has released four studio albums, the latest being Drip or Drown 2 in 2023.

The RICO trial against Young Thug and his co-defendants has been going on for several months and has featured controversial use of rap lyrics and gestures as evidence of gang affiliation.

Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffrey Williams, is facing charges of conspiring to violate the RICO Act, participating in criminal street gang activity, and various drug and gun offenses. He has pleaded not guilty to all counts and maintains that YSL stands for Young Stoner Life and is simply a music
