One can say that if laughter is the best medicine, there are some Black comedians whose jokes could be the ultimate prescription.

Only a few hilarious Black comedians have gone on to become some of the most successful stand-ups in the world. 

From apocalyptic standup Dave Chappelle to the many hilarious faces of Eddie Murphy, Wanda Sykes, Chris Rock, and so many others.

The best of Black comedians come in many forms. While some of these famous Black comedians joke about family in their stand-up acts, others crack us up with wise political jokes. 

However, there is a new crop of Black comedians raising and breaking barriers in the world of comedy. 

This new list of comedians acts brings fresh perspectives, razor-sharp wit, and tons of humor to every stage and screen they touch.

Michelle Buteau

Michelle Buteau is a stand-up comedian, actress, producer, and television and podcast host.

She is a familiar face who has been the centerpiece for comedy for many years.

Her infectious energy and quick wit on her Netflix special “Welcome to Buteaupia” won her a Critics’ Choice Award, and her memoir “Survival of the Thickest” has been adapted into a hit series.

This year, Michelle continues to deliver as she stars in her latest Netflix special, “A Buteau-ful Mind at Radio City Music Hall.”

Tacarra Williams

Bronx native Tacarra Williams is a comedian, actress, television personality, and force to be reckoned with.

Tacarra’s comedy style tackles real-life issues that resonate with her audiences across all walks of life.

She was a runner-up on the television stand-up reality competition series Bring the Funny in 2019 and is also the host of the CW television series Totally Funny Kids.

Dewayne Perkins

Dewayne Perkins is a comedian, writer, actor, and producer. He is a force making a name for himself both on stage and behind the scenes. 

Dewayne is an Emmy-nominated writer for shows like “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “The Amber Ruffin Show,” showing the versatility and his unique perspective that shape this comedian.

Jaboukie Young-White

Jaboukie Young-White is a multi-talented comedian, writer, filmmaker, and musician from Chicago.

His ability to tackle complex topics with his razor-sharp humor and fearless approach with a light touch was seen when he was a correspondent on The Daily Show With Trevor Noah.

Jaboukie was named one of Variety’s 10 Comics to Watch at the 2018 Just for Laughs Montreal Comedy Festival. 

He has performed stand-up twice on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon and debuted his half-hour comedy special on Comedy Central Stand-up Presents. 

Josh Johnson

Josh Johnson is a stand-up comedian, writer, and the host of The Josh Johnson Show.”

Just like Jaboukie Young-White, Josh is a correspondent on The Daily Show after being a writer on the show since 2017. 

He has previously worked as a writer and also performed on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Johnson toured with Trevor Noah on his Loud & Clear tour for several years, and in 2025, the Alexandria, Louisiana, native is set to tour globally, bringing his whip-smart humor and thoughtful commentary to new audiences.
