It appears that Tyler Perry is aware of the criticism he has received and has addressed those who have voiced concerns about his movies – particularly with his most recent movie, “Divorce In The Black”.
Perry responded to some of these critiques in a recent interview with Keke Palmer for her podcast, Baby, This Is Keke Palmer.
From his modest beginnings as a stage actor portraying Madea, he rose to prominence as one of the most influential Black men in Hollywood.
When Palmer brought up recent criticism of his film “Divorce in the Black,” Perry stuck to his original statement and instead talked about how he made the film.
He stated that: “If you let somebody talk you out of a place that God has put you in, you are going to find yourself in Hell.”
He went on to say that he knows “for a fact” that what he is doing with his movies is “exactly what I am supposed to be doing.”
Tyler Perry doesn’t bash people who criticize his work. He rather focuses on the people who enjoy what he makes.
He noted that if “I have thousands of emails from people saying ‘this changed my life,’ ‘oh my god, you know me.’ So that is what’s important.”
The filmmaker also noted that many of his fans are disenfranchised and do not feel seen or related to on a regular basis.
“People like me who are grinders, who know what it’s like. Don’t discount these people and say their stories don’t matter.”
Keke Palmer and Tyler Perry have been friends for many years. In an interview with People Magazine, she said that at the age of 14, Tyler offered to help with her skin issue.
“To this day, I’m thankful to Tyler Perry. I don’t tell many people that story, but I was so grateful to him for helping me because he had the resources and he was paying it forward.”
Eventually, Keke and Tyler Perry collaborated on his films Madea’s Family Reunion (2006), Madea Goes to Jail (2009), and Tyler’s most recent film, Divorce in the Black, which is presently available for streaming on Prime.
Celebrity Net Worth estimates Tyler’s net worth to be $1 billion. He has made over $660 million at the box office and has enjoyed success with his filmmaking methodology.
