Animations are still one of the top-grossing film genres of 2024, and thanks to this, Despicable Me 4 achieved the highest opening weekend sales.
The sequel remained No. 1 on the charts with $44.7M from 4,449 theaters ($211.1M total) for its second weekend, down 40.5%.
Other notable animation franchises that achieved such height include Shrek brought in $4.02B, which recently announced its seventh film in 2026.
The five Toy Story films brought in $3.27B; all six Ice Age movies also made $3.2B; and two Frozen films brought in $2.72B.

Despicable Me 4 also crossed the $200 million barrier to end Sunday with a total of $211.1 million in North America.
Gru and the cunning Minions also kept up their good sales overseas, including their debut in China, earning more than $11.8 million and bringing in a total of $226.7 million abroad and $437.8 million worldwide.
The box office’s other animated hit has been Pixar’s Inside Out 2, which made $50.2 million for Disney from 47 overseas territories, bringing its worldwide total to $1.35 billion ($777.5 million international).
Box office has had other successful live-action moneymakers like Pirates of the Caribbean, which brought in $4.52B.
Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible, which made $4.11B; The Twilight series, which made $3.36B; and Hunger Games, which brought in $3.28B.
