The album SOS released by top performer, SZA, has reportedly broken Michael Jackson’s record as the longest-running Top 10 album by a Black artist in Billboard 200 history.

The recognition comes nearly three years after the project was released. On March 12, 2025, SOS was said to have reached a tie with Michael Jackson’s Thriller after spending 79 non-consecutive weeks in the Billboard 200’s Top 10.

That achievement placed SZA among a prestigious class of music legends. However, the album eventually exceeded Michael Jackson’s record, according to sources monitoring the performance of the project.

Some followers have since reacted to the latest development. They include Terrence Henderson, President of Top Dawg Entertainment and SZA’s longtime manager, who took to X to commend the award-winning songstress.

The manager, expressing his delight, noted that SOS was recorded at Westlake Studios, the same place Michael Jackson’s Thriller was recorded.

“SMH. Man. This is crazy…SZA you’re the illest. The best. We’ve had this conversation and you didn’t believe me when I told you you were the one. You’re literally the one. Shout out to the King,” he wrote. “What’s iLL is we recorded the majority of SOS at Westlake,” he added.

Released in December 2022, SOS debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and remained there for 10 nonconsecutive weeks, and has remained at the spot after more than two years. The album reportedly ended 2024 at No. 6 on Billboard’s year-end Albums chart.

SZA is preparing to join Kendrick Lamar for their highly anticipated GNX Tour, scheduled for April 19, 2025. Both stars performed at the well-patronized Super Bowl halftime show.

In January this year, SZA contemplated switching genres and taking up a charitable mission when her recording contract ended.

“To fulfill my last 2 album requirements, I think I just wanna make peaceful children’s music and get outta here…Then go be a farmer and donate the produce to underserved communities,” she wrote on X.
