There was a drama of a sort in court when the judge in A$AP Rocky’s gun assault trial mistook the rapper’s mother, Renee Black, as her sister.
On Wednesday, January 22, 2025, during the second day of jury selection in Rocky’s trial, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge, Mark S. Arnold inquired about the attendees in the Harlem native’s section.
The rapper is currently on trial for the November 2021 alleged shooting of his childhood friend, Terell Ephron, formerly known as A$AP Relli. The following August, Rocky was charged with two counts of assault involving a semi-automatic rifle.

As legal reporter Meghann Cuniff shared on X, formerly Twitter, Rocky, real name Rakim Mayers, confirmed that two individuals with him were his mother and sister, Erika B.

But Judge Arnold was baffled that Black was a mother of two, to which Rocky’s attorney,Joe Tacopina, asked, “You can’t tell, right, which one’s the mom? You must have had him when you were about 7?” the judge asked before Black confirmed that she was 26 upon giving birth to the “Tailor Swif” artist.
“You are very beautiful. That’s on the record,” he declared. As Rocky and his sister left the courtroom, Cuniff reiterated the comment that Judge Arnold gave his mother, which he laughed at.

In an earlier report, A$AP Rocky has reportedly turned down a plea offer of 180 days in jail involving the alleged shooting of his former friend, Terell Ephron. The plea deal would’ve given him six months of jail time, and thus, he is at risk of a guilty verdict and up to 24 years behind bars.
On Tuesday, January 21, 2025, the rapper’s gun assault trial began in Los Angeles, involving his alleged 2021 shooting of his childhood friend, Terell Ephron, formerly known as A$AP Relli.
Had the rapper pleaded guilty to one of two felony counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, he would’ve received a seven-year suspended sentence with three years on probation. Rocky’s lawyer, Joe Tacopina, maintains that the firearm, seen in surveillance footage, was a prop gun carried for security purposes.
