Legendary soul singer and former Hip-Hop trio Sequence member Angie Stone died at age 63.
Her daughter Diamond verified the sad news on Facebook on Saturday with the sorrowful message, “My mommy is gone.”

Deborah R. Champagne, Stone’s representative, said that Angie died in a vehicle accident after leaving Montgomery, Alabama, early on Saturday morning after a concert. She was traveling to Baltimore for the CIAA Tournament 2025, according to Stone’s Instagram.
The Billboard US Top Black Singles chart saw their breakthrough hit, Funk You Up, peak at number 15. They made further hit recordings under Sylvia Robinson’s direction, such as Monster Jam featuring rapper Spoonie Gee and “Funky Sound (Tear The Roof Off),” before breaking up in 1985, the year after she gave birth to her daughter Diamond with her ex-husband Rodney “Lil Rodney C!” Stone.

Later, Stone created Devox with Gerry DeVeaux, Lenny Kravitz’s nephew, and became the main vocalist of Vertical Hold. He also contributed as a lyricist and backup vocalist on D’Angelo’s Voodoo and Brown Sugar. At that point, she became a solo artist, and in September 1999, the year after she and D’Angelo delivered their son, Michael Archer II, she released her first solo album, Black Diamond.

She released classic hits like Brotha, Wish I Didn’t Miss You and No More Rain (In This Cloud). She also starred in Fighting Temptations, sang the Girlfriends theme song, and appeared in a number of TV shows and movies, including In The Cut, Saints & Sinners, Scary Movie V, One on One, School Gyrls and Lincoln Heights.
