The organizers of Afro Nation, the annual music festival, have released a new short film titled ‘Afro Nation: A Movement.’
The 17-minute documentary highlights the impact and growth of Afrobeats and Amapiano, the fast-growing music genres in Africa.
Directed by Rita Guimarães, the production delves into the Afrobeats and Amapiano genres and features interviews with key figures such as Musa Keys, a heavyweight of South Africa’s Amapiano rhythm
Other appearances are by Ghanaian rapper Black Sherif and Afrobeat band, The Compozers. Artistes Camidoh, Kamo Mphela, Skyla Tylaa, and Nelson Freitas all shared their thoughts in the video.
‘A Movement’ explores the significant influence of two genres and demonstrates its global reach. The film includes footage from previous Afro Nation events in Portugal, highlighting performances from artistes including Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Ayra Starr.
The documentary also features interviews with the festival’s co-founder and Eddie Kadi, host of The Official UK Afrobeats Chart on BBC 1Xtra. Afrobeats historian and podcaster Shopsydoo also features prominently.
The film has so far accumulated over 31,000 views on YouTube as of March 20, 2024. Sometime last year, the Afro Nation show which was expected to go to Nigeria, was postponed for varied reasons.
However, it will be recalled that early this year, the Queen of pop music, Nicki Minaj, and the Prince of Afrobeats, Rema, Asake, were announced as headliners for the biggest beach jams scheduled for June in Portugal this year.
The celebration will take place at Algarve Praia da Rocha Portimão, Portugal, with performances from other top Afrobeats talents, including, Omah Lay, Tyler ICU, Flavour, Diamond Platnumz, Focalistic, and many others.
British rapper and singer, J Hus, known officially as Momodou Lamin Jallow, is also one of the lead acts to make the festival a memorable experience for guests.
Afro Nation is described as a major festival dedicated to urban music in Europe and covers music styles from Afrobeats, hip hop, R&B, and dancehall.
The celebration has, over the years, attracted hundreds of patrons from different countries, and serves as a melting pot of mixed cultures, as guests sample food, fashion, dance, and music from different jurisdictions.
