Late Aaliyah got her own Barbie on her 46th birthday. Toymaker Mattel introduced the Aaliyah Barbie on Thursday. The Aaliyah Barbie doll is inspired by her iconic One in a Million music video.
The late R&B princess, who died in 2001 aged 22, has been immortalized in Barbie form on what would have marked the singer’s 46th birthday.
The doll is dressed in a black faux leather ensemble with several accessories that scream ’90s. These include studded lace-up details, sleek black shades, and her signature hairstyle, with hair swooping over one eye.
The Barbie team is said to have worked closely with Aaliyah’s brother, Rashad Haughton, to develop the concept for the doll.
They also ensured the result was true to Aaliyah’s legacy, style, and persona.
The doll may also be available at selected Target locations and on Target’s website, according to Mattel’s website.
There are dozens listed for sale on eBay, and they’ve been selling for around $100.
Preorders for the doll were available on MattelCreations.com and sold out within 30 minutes, per The Detroit News.
It was also available on Target’s website and may restock on its official release date of January 26.
Aaliyah’s brother Rashad Haughton, in a statement, said:
“I can vividly remember my sister playing with her favorite Barbie dolls for hours when we were kids. She would make them sing, dance, and perform little concerts.
It’s clear to me now that she was imagining dreams that would eventually become reality when she embarked on a career in entertainment at just fifteen years old.”
He went on to say, “Inspiring confidence, belief in yourself, and embracing who you truly are is the essence of Barbie. My sister would be ecstatic to see her legacy celebrated this way.”
Krista Berger, Senior Vice President of Barbie and Global Head of Dolls at Mattel, also said,
“We hope the Aaliyah Barbie serves as a powerful reminder to her loyal fans and Barbie collectors everywhere that, like Aaliyah, they can unlock their limitless potential and achieve anything they set their minds to.”
Since Aaliyah died in 2001, she’s had posthumous collaborations with Mac Cosmetics, and her music has since been made available to stream.
