Iconic rapper and fashion mogul Kanye West has expressed his disappointment over a perceived diss from fellow Chicago rapper and past collaborator Lil Durk.
Speaking on Justin Laboy’s podcast, The Download, Kanye West opened up about his relationship with Durk.
Durk, who had previously worked with Kanye on the title track of his first Vultures album, had sent in a verse that did not sit well with Kanye. The verse, which included a line about turning a Yeezy shirt into a doormat, was repeated four times, much to Kanye’s dismay.
Kanye reached out to Durk, expressing his heartbreak and questioning the motive behind the lyrics.
The situation reminded Kanye of J. Cole’s diss track, ‘False Prophets’, and Drake’s consistent lyrical jabs at him.
However, he felt more betrayed by Durk’s actions, considering their shared roots and past collaborations. Kanye speculated that Durk might have harbored ill feelings towards him all along.
The controversial verse appears to be from an unreleased track titled “Field Trip,” which is rumored to be part of the upcoming Vultures 2 album. The song, featuring Playboi Carti and potentially Kodak Black, in leaked in February in which Durk raps about giving away his new Yeezy hat.
Kanye West admitted that Durk’s lyrics hurt him more than Durk joining Drake on tour.
“He must have never really liked me. I don’t know exactly what it is. I spoke to this man a few times about the line and then he changed the line to: ‘I take my Yeezy hat off and give my lil’ hoe that.’ And I’m just like, ‘Why y’all think y’all can play with me?” he said.
The relationship between Kanye West and Durk has been rocky since last year when Kanye temporarily removed Durk from his song “Vultures”. Durk responded to his removal on social media, advising Kanye to consider it a blessing. Durk had also previously removed Kanye’s contributions to his album, Almost Healed.
In an interview with Akademiks, Durk explained that Kanye had worked on his entire album but chose not to use it.
