American singer SZA has voiced her support for the people of Palestine in their ongoing war against Israel.
The singer from Top Dawg Entertainment was on her international SOS Tour, which recently stopped in New Zealand. At Auckland’s Spark Arena, she expressed her solidarity with the thousands affected by the ongoing violence in Gaza.
A fan-recorded TikTok video from the concert shows the 34-year-old singer pointing to a crowd member and declaring her support for Palestine. The region has been in a state of high tension since Hamas launched an attack in Israel last October. It resulted in the death of hundreds of civilians. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have since launched relentless attacks on the occupied territory.
According to TIME, the death toll in the strip surpassed 30,000 last month, and living conditions continue to worsen.
SZA follows other celebrity supporters of Palestine
Tyler, The Creator, recently showed his support by wearing a pin of the Palestinian flag during his headlining set at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.
Last year, redveil used his set at the Odd Future alum’s Camp Flog Gnaw festival to call for a ceasefire in Gaza. He displayed a list of names of all the children who have suffered as a result of the war. According to WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, a child was being killed every 10 minutes in Gaza.
Redveil encouraged his audience to take action against what many have deemed a genocide. He shared a link, urging his fans to demand a ceasefire. Before leaving the stage, he led the crowd in a “Free Palestine” chant. He later shared the sequence on social media, calling it the most important part of his set.
Other notable figures in Hip-Hop and R&B, including The Weeknd, Dave, Kid Cudi, Macklemore, and 40, have also recently expressed solidarity with the Palestinian cause.
How Rihanna Got SZA Frustrated By ‘Taking Her Song’
Meanwhile, SZA recalled in an interview how her track Consideration, originally recorded for her 2017 album Ctrl, was given to Rihanna.
According to SZA, she had not only recorded Consideration but had gone the extra mile by filming a music video for the track, fully gearing up for its release.
However, just days before the big reveal, Rihanna expressed interest in the song for her album, Anti. Negotiations unfolded behind the scenes, leaving SZA in the dark about the fate of her cherished creation.
