Michael Jackson’s youngest son, Blanket, has boldly proposed a Los Angeles judge to prevent his late father’s estate from covering his grandmother’s legal expenses.
Court documents, made public by Billboard, reveal that Katherine Jackson is opposing John Branca and John McClain, co-executors of the late King of Pop’s estate, from proceeding with an undisclosed transaction.
According to legal accounts, the disagreement is incurring her significant legal fees, which Blanket contends should not be the financial obligation of Michael Jackson’s estate.
The Jackson children — Prince, Blanket, and Paris — initially sided with their grandmother against Branca and McClain’s transaction. However, once the probate court approved the two, all three children accepted the decision.
Despite not having released any new music since the legendary singer’s untimely death, the Michael Jackson estate is valued in the billions of dollars.
Documents submitted to the Los Angeles County Court in 2019 by the superstar’s legal team indicate his estate has generated $1.7 billion in profits since his passing. Jackson died in June 2009, leaving his wealth to his three children. Katherine Jackson was appointed guardian ad litem until each of them reached the age of 18.
Attorney John Branca and music executive John McClain manage Michael Jackson’s estate. They were named the executors of his estate in Jackson’s last will. Under their guidance, the estate has generated substantial revenue. Despite the complexities and challenges of managing such a significant legacy, they have successfully upheld the enduring impact of the King of Pop.
Meanwhile, Sony Music Group has reached a potentially record-breaking deal to purchase half of Michael Jackson’s music catalog.
The New York Times reports that in addition to Michael’s hits, the music company’s stakes will comprise well-known songs written or performed by other artistes.
The deal might entail the highest valuation ever applied to a musician’s assets; some reports even put the value at $1.5 billion.
