Afrobeats star Davido has paid glowing tribute to legendary musician Angélique Kidjo, as the latter marks 40 years in the industry.
In a recent video, Davido thanked the Wombolombo hitmaker for opening doors for many African talents, including himself.
“I’ve always wanted to work with Mama Africa, that’s what we call her, for a long long time…It is the way she kind of performs anywhere and for different crowds. And she has represented us so well, you know, on the global scene. She opened doors for new artists like myself,” he stated in the clip.
Angélique Kidjo, currently on her anniversary concert tour, posted the video and thanked Davido for the “kind words.”
It would be recalled that both performers collaborated on the single Na Money, a record on Davido’s Grammy-nominated Timeless Album, which also features The Cavemen.
The team later shot the official video for Na Money, which has since accumulated 5.5 million views. The soothing melody has also crossed 15 million streams on Audiomack alone.
Na Money video was shot in Paris, France. The song blends African rhythms smoothly while incorporating modern instrumentation, supported by sweet vocals from Angélique Kidjo and The Cavemen.
The video has been praised for its depth and qualities, as well as the exceptional talents of the performers. Angélique Kidjo and Davido have been an inspiration to many music enthusiasts as they continue to stamp their authority in the industry with their distinct talent and creativity.
The Five-time Grammy Award-winner has been on a series of tours as part of activities marking her 40th anniversary in music. She has performed in Hong Kong, New Zealand, and recently showed up at the Sydney Opera House in Australia, thanking her fans after a sold-out concert.
Other performances have been scheduled until November 2, 2024. Last November, she was at a similar concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The anniversary concert has the tagline: “40 Years of Music and Activism.”
