On Thursday’s episode of The View, Whoopi Goldberg revealed something startling. The ladies talked about a recent study that listed the “benefits” of gossiping. The conversation then shifted to the risks associated with sharing anecdotes in social and professional contexts.
This prompted the 68-year-old to reveal the reconnaissance on Thursday during their discussion of the perils of gossip in social and professional circles at the Hot Topics table with her co-hosts.
Goldberg was reminded by conservative co-host and former Trump White House associate Alyssa Farah Griffin that she had leaked fake gossip to expose a mole on The View.
“Because what you can do is plant false information and see if it makes its way around,” Griffin said.
Goldberg looked at co-host Joy Behar and said, “We have done that; we have done that. “We took that action to find the speaker. Yes”.
After reacting initially in bewilderment, Behar turned to face the audience and muttered, “Oh,” as if memories of the battlefield suddenly came flooding back.
Just before the show went to commercial, legal expert Sunny Hostin said, “Now, you see, that’s a little bit of gossip I would like to know about,” to laughter from the audience. Even though Goldberg and Behar chose not to reveal the identity of the mole, previous scandals may have given away who the women sought to out.
Since its launch in 1997, cohosts of The View have come and gone. While the ladies’ arguments have garnered media attention over the years—and the mole Goldberg mentioned was unconfirmed—multiple rumors concerning Meghan McCain, the previous co-host, dogged the program from 2017 to 2021.
A string of leaks, including several Page Six articles claiming that there was backstage friction between Meghan McCain and her co-hosts, dogged the show during her tenure.
