On January 1, 2024, rapper and actor Boosie BadAzz made headlines when he left the Broadway production of The Color Purple abruptly, claiming that the show was “pushing the narrative.”

Torrence Hatch Jr., better known by his stage name Boosie BadAzz, abruptly left the theater during the Tony Award-winning musical, igniting debate about his position and his outrage over the movie’s portrayal of a lesbian romance.

The Color Purple tells the story of Celie, a young African American woman who faces obstacles and finds her voice in the early 1900s. The musical has been criticized for how it portrays African American women, despite receiving praise for its powerful performances and intriguing plot.

On Tuesday, Boosie BadAzz used X, formerly known as Twitter, to share that he and his kids left The Color Purple showing in Theaters, highlighting the production’s “pushing the narrative.” He announced that he was not going to let his children watch the show.

This sparked a heated debate on the social media platform after receiving a lot of negative feedback from his followers. While some have criticized the rapper for leaving the show early, others have applauded him for speaking out against what he sees as a negative portrayal of African American women.

I HAD TO WALK OUT THIS COLOR PURPLE  MOVIE ( N TWO OTHER OLDER COUPLES WALKED OUT ALSO.) 🍿BECAUSE I HAD MY LITTLE GIRLS WITH ME N IT SEEMED LIKE A 🌈 LOVE STORY‼️GOOD ACTING BUT WHOEVER WROTE THE SCRIPT IS PUSHING THE NARRATIVE HARD ‼️…

A discussion concerning the show’s message and whether it is appropriate for a rapper to leave a Broadway musical has been triggered by Boosie’s remarks.

The decision to leave The Color Purple show has nevertheless drawn attention to the television show and its message, despite the controversy surrounding it.

DERICK LEE @PEACHYKEENCUTZ opined: “Well, actually, your reaching: back in those days, older men were allowed to take younger wives. It was consensual, and actually, in the original movie, Celie’s biggest issue wasn’t being married to an older man; it was being first separated from her sister and also from her children while…”

HELGA PATAKI @itsgivingcoke1 also noted: “He didn’t draw the line there because he literally bragged online about paying adults to molest his underage 13-year-old son and nephews. A whole groomer.”
