International streaming platform, Spotify, has released the list of popular songs in the world of RnB for the year 2023, and the names are quite revealing.
Ubiquitous Water by Tyla made it to the list with a host of other popular records.
You might certainly have listened to some of the songs, while others might not sound familiar. But this could be an opportunity to check them out as we zoom into the Top 5 songs on the list.
Snooze – SZA
Snooze is rated the No.1 R&B song, according to Spotify. The song comes from singer SZA’s second studio album, SOS which was released in 2022. The acoustic version features Canadian singer Justin Bieber.
Snooze has been described as a “dreamy ballad” where SZA reflects on a relationship that she treasured so much despite feeling like she was the only one trying to make the relationship work.
The song reached No.2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and appeared on charts in countries including Australia, Canada, Singapore, and New Zealand.
It was rated the top R&B song at the 2023 Billboard Music Awards and nominated for Best R&B Song at the 2024 Grammys. It is said to be the only song to have spent all of 2023 charting on the Hot 100 so far.
Water – Tyla
Water is a tune that resonates with lots of young people. Even the older ones have managed to catch the ‘fever’ as it blends Amapiano and Afrobeats perfectly. Water has achieved an extraordinary feat on the Billboard Chart, reaching the number one spot on the Billboard Afrobeats Chart.
Tyla has also gone ahead and gained other recognition, including a nomination for the 2024 Grammys. This and other remarkable achievements have buttressed Tyla’s status as a fast-rising superstar. It is, therefore, not surprising that she has been listed among Spotify’s top R&B stars.
On My Mama – Victoria Monet
Next on the list is On My Mama a song by singer-songwriter Victoria Monét. This track comes from the singer’s debut album, Jaguar II.
The song is said to have received positive reviews, especially for both the audio and video versions that were released subsequently. The song had been streamed widely, while the video was praised for its complex choreography.
