Carl Dean, husband of music legend Dolly Parton has died at the age of 82. The singer announced his passing in a statement posted on social media on Monday, March 3, 2025.
The statement did not reveal the cause of death. Ms. Parton and her husband, Carl Dean, were married for almost 60 years, celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2016.

Despite inspiring such iconic songs as ‘Jolene’ and ‘From Here to the Moon and Back,’ Mr. Dean was a deeply private man who avoided the public eye as his wife’s career flourished.

As Dolly Parton rose to global stardom, her husband, Mr. Dean, chose a life of privacy. In a 2020 Entertainment Tonight interview, she explained that he had always shunned the public eye.
“Ms. Parton explained, ‘It simply isn’t his nature. He’s a quiet, reserved individual, and he understood that public exposure would rob him of his peace. He was correct.’

Born to Virginia and Edgar Dean, Carl Dean lived in East Ridge, Tennessee, as Dolly Parton shared with a Chattanooga news channel. While she became a star, he pursued a life of quiet accomplishment through his asphalt-paving business.

According to Ms. Parton’s website, they met when she was 18 and Mr. Dean was 21. They married two years later on Memorial Day in 1966 in Ringgold, Ga., with only Ms. Parton’s mother, a preacher and his wife in attendance.
In a 2008 interview with NPR, Dolly Parton shared that the inspiration for her iconic 1973 song ‘Jolene’ came from a bank teller who had caught her husband’s attention in the early years of their relationship.

“She said in the interview, ‘He just loved going to the bank because she gave him so much attention. It became a funny little thing between us—I had to say, “You’re spending a lot of time at that bank. I don’t think we have that much money!” It’s a completely innocent story, even though the song sounds so dramatic.”
He did not only inspire ‘Jolene’ which became a hit song worldwide. According to Ms. Parton, her husband inspired several other songs of hers.

Dolly Parton’s website confirms that her 2012 love ballad “From Here to the Moon and Back‘ was written for Mr. Dean, and in an interview with ABC News, she revealed that his passion for rock music served as inspiration for her 2023 album ‘Rockstar.”
Although they had no children together, Ms. Parton acknowledged Mr. Dean was a significant stabilizing influence in her life.
“God has been so kind,’ she stated. ‘He gifted me Carl Dean, who was exactly what I needed.”
