Producer Pharrell Williams has reportedly suspended work on a new biopic he planned to release later this year in collaboration with Universal Pictures.

The film, Golden, is said to have stars including Halle Bailey, Kelvin Harris, Jr., and others, but was suspended during post-production because the producer believed the prospects for the project may not be too bright.

“When all of us got into the editing room, we collectively decided there wasn’t a path forward to tell the version of this story that we originally envisioned,” Pharrell Williams was quoted in a statement by the film director.

“We appreciate all the hard work of the talented cast and crew. While we’re disappointed we can’t deliver this film, we have incredible partners at Universal and will collaborate in a different capacity again soon,” he added.

The team is reported to have invested about $20 million in the project before deciding to pull the brakes. Those involved in the production have been paid for their effort, sources have said. Golden is likened to Williams’ recent project Piece by Piece, released last year.

“It’s a coming-of-age story about self-discovery and pursuing your dreams, but it’s so much more magical than that. It’s a celebration of Black life, Black culture, and most importantly, Black joy,” the Happy hitmaker said about the suspended film.

That notwithstanding, Williams and Universal Studios say they will come up with something more exciting in the future.

Last year, the singer and fashion executive was named goodwill ambassador for artistic education and entrepreneurship by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The recognition took place at a ceremony in Paris on Tuesday, December 17, 2024. His role, according to the honors, would involve promoting initiatives including “the protection of indigenous cultures, the advancement of education, and health care for women, among others.

He has pledged to “deepen the sense of unity and togetherness” and work to “even the odds for marginalized communities.”

Pharrel was described by UNESCO as “a complete artist [who is] also a humanist who works to put culture at the service of peace and bringing people together.
