It is the season of thanksgiving and appreciation, and rapper GloRilla gave the celebration meaning with a generous gesture.
The top star is reported to have made a $25,000 donation to her alma mater, Melrose High School, which would be used for a new library space.
She explained her inspiration: “I always wished somebody could do that when I was going to school, and so the fact that I can do it now just warms my heart.”
Sources say Melrose High School would name the library after the rapper. It will be called the “Gloria H. Woods Media Center” and is expected to be completed next summer.
GloRilla has had a successful music year, having been crowned the ‘Hottest Female Rapper’ in 2024 by Billboard.
The publication unveiled its year-end list on Wednesday, December 4, ranking the top 10 women in hip-hop, with GloRilla leading the pack. Her journey to the top has not been without challenges.
After experiencing a dip in 2023 with singles like Cha Cha failing to match the success of her previous releases, the Memphis rapper eventually made a powerful comeback.
Her breakout moment came with the release of Yeah Glo! at the beginning of 2024. The track soared into the top 30 of the Billboard Hot 100, showcasing her determination and resilience.
Collaborations and chart-topping tunes like “Wanna Be” with Megan Thee Stallion and the TGIF kept her in the spotlight. She earned praise from pop icons like Rihanna and Taylor Swift.
She has also been busy performing at well-patronized events like the ONE Musicfest held at the Atlanta Central Park.
Other talents like Victoria Monet, Method Man, and Redman also brought their A-game to the show.
Organizers of the festival partnered with the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and the Black Coalition to amplify voter engagement as the US general elections drew nearer.
GloRilla’s gesture to her alma mater is justified, considering her eventful year and many breakthroughs.
