A protester who was injured during a George Floyd demonstration has reportedly been paid $2 million for her predicament.
LaToya Ratlieff, 38, was reportedly shot in the eye with a rubber bullet that a Florida Detective fired on May 31, 2020.
Reports indicate that she choked on tear gas and was left with a broken right eye socket, nerve damage, and a head injury.
Hundreds of American citizens poured onto the street in 2020 to demand justice for violence against the black community and the killing of George Floyd during a police altercation.
Some protesters were said to have filed lawsuits for the injury and brutality they suffered, and LaToya was one of them. Apart from this victim, seven others are believed to have received compensation.
In a statement following the announcement, LaToya said the settlement was a victory for anyone who demands justice, but it cannot make up for the suffering.
“There were moments when, mentally and physically, I was ready to give up. But I tried to focus on the fact that this was important, not just for me, but for everyone who seeks to use their voice to create meaningful change…”
“While the financial settlement is important for the City to know that it cannot sweep these injustices under the rug, the corrective requirements will make sure that what happened to me must never happen to anyone else,” she noted.
In May this year, George Floyd’s mother and daughter said they would capture events leading to his death in a film titled Daddy Saved The World.
George Floyd’s mother, Roxie Washington, and Gianna Floyd, his daughter who was six years old at the time of his death, are the executive producers of the film. The release date for the film was not announced at the time.
The project, according to reports, was being worked on in multiple studios, including Radar Pictures, 8 Queens Film & Media Productions, and Night Fox Entertainment.
George Floyd, 46, died on May 25, 2020, after a former Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin, who had since been sentenced to prison, was seen on camera pinning his knee to Floyd’s neck for about nine minutes.
