The open marriage between Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, which was disclosed in 2021 on Red Table Talk, sparked discussions online for months after Jada revealed she had an affair with August Alsina.

In 2023, the Smiths are back in the news as a result of interviews Jada Pinkett Smith granted before the debut of her memoir, “Worthy,” which was released on October 17, 2023.

The Thousand Kisses singer has so far shared details about her prior life with late rapper Tupac, her emotional experiences, and her turbulent marriage to Will Smith—from which she has been estranged for seven years.

The memoir focuses on the difficulties she faced in her marriage to Will Smith, especially with regard to his pursuit of Hollywood stardom, and how it conflicted with her idea of happiness. She wrote, regarding the idea of an open marriage: “He (Will) wanted to be one of the biggest names in Hollywood and was always surprised that I didn’t.”

She also addressed misunderstandings regarding their connection and explained her “entanglement” with August Alsina.

“As time went on, there were different times in my marriage when Will and I decided we were not together,” she said in a recent interview with People magazine.

“Whereas weddings reveal to the world, I was genuinely considering a divorce or separation, and we went on to lead erratic lives. I believe that’s when people may have believed they needed to be in an open relationship, and we simply didn’t want people to understand the dynamics of our relationship.”

Pinkett Smith recalls that unforgettable Oscars night, one of the most bizarre of her life when Will shocked everyone by storming the stage and slapping Chris Rock after Rock cracked an unscripted joke about Pinkett Smith’s closely cropped hair in the second-to-last chapter of the book, “The Holy Joke, The Holy Slap, and Holy Lessons.”

Rock has stated that he was ignorant about her alopecia, a disorder that causes hair loss. (It wasn’t the first time he made fun of her on the Oscar stage.) Smith screamed up at Rock, “Keep my wife’s name out of your [expletive] mouth!” Once he had taken his place again, he received the Best Actor Oscar for “King Richard” a few minutes later.
