The Deliverance, Lee Daniels’ most recent film, takes us on an unsettling journey about a haunting, exploration of faith, fear, and the supernatural.
What makes this so terrifying isn’t just the demonic demons that haunt a house; it’s also the fact that people didn’t believe a Black lady when she told the truth about what was happening to her and her family.
The Deliverance draws inspiration from the true story of Gary’s Indiana single mother, LaToya Ammons.
She and her mother began witnessing weird occurrences in their house in 2011, including her daughter levitating over her bed and a fly infestation.
Ammons told the Indianapolis Star in an interview that the house was supposedly haunted by more than 200 malevolent spirits.

However, the Department of Child Safety took Ammons’ children away, refusing to believe in what appeared to be impossible. She had to wait six months to see her children again.
Daniel spoke with Adams regarding the project. She allowed him the room to explore ideas like believing in Black women, and she did so in a “very respectful” manner.
“When a Black woman tells you to believe her, believe her,” he declares.
The cast members also discuss how important it is to believe Black women when they speak for the first time because it is essential to our truth and power.
Lee Daniels made an appearance on The Breakfast Club talking about his complicated relationship with Jussie, which one might think he was going to be part of in this latest project.
However, along with Daniels, Andra Day, Mo’Nique, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, and Glenn Close are the cast members of The Deliverance.
Currently showing in cinemas, The Deliverance made its Netflix debut on August 30.
