Jon B appeared on the podcast Can We Talk R&B? hosted by Ian Von where he disclosed that he wasn’t all that happy with Gunna and Chlöe Bailey using a sample of his 1997 song
A five-minute snippet from the singer’s conversation was made available on YouTube by the podcast.
In the video, B and the presenter discussed how his 1997 hit was still holding them in a “chokehold.”
During their discussion, Jon B brought up how frequently his Cool Relax single is sampled after the song peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1998.
He also mentioned the DS4Ever song You & Me, saying, “Somewhere last year was Gunna and Chlöe Bailey; they put that ratchet record out that I couldn’t stand.”
As the debate went on, Jon B contrasted the repeated guitar chords in his famous song to a new song by Robin Thicke that he claimed used the same chords.
Jon B said that despite the obvious similarities, he still thinks Thicke’s song is great pointing out that They Don’t Know is regularly sampled.
Additionally, Jon B claimed that Chloe Bailey and Gunna “never” had his permission to sample the song and intends to talk to Gunna about it.
Ultimately, the artiste clarified that he is aware that they are honoring him by sampling his work.
“But at the same time, my lane is my lane, and my area is my area, and I earned that. Just like if you made a hit in your area. I’m not just going to come into your area and take your joint and make it mine and then not pay you.”
