A video that has resurfaced on social media captures the moment actor Denzel Washington reunited with his former Sunday School teacher and got emotional.

The footage showed the award-winning star sitting behind the pulpit, preparing to speak to an audience when another church member informed him of the presence of his Sunday school teacher, Mother Ruby Scott.

Recognizing who the woman was, 69-year-old Washington walked over to her swiftly, and as he got closer, he got emotional and covered his face with his hand while the crowd looked on.

“Lord, I remember you. Hallelujah, oh, Lord. I haven’t seen you in 65 years. I see you now. It is good to be seen by you. Give me a quick lesson now,” Washington remarked.

The elderly woman responded: “Faith makes everything possible, but love gives you strength to do it,” to which Washington took a step back, seemingly shocked by the powerful words.

He then kissed Mother Scott on the cheek, out of respect, and returned to his seat. The clip generated mixed reactions from the public when it appeared on a TikTok page.

“…He hugged her like a little boy that knew he was safe…Thank you, Lord, for elders,” a fan wrote.  “There’s nothing like Black Church! The foundation and teachings run deep. You’ll never forget,” another added.

“Give him the Emmy, Oscar, Tony, Grammy for this alone…Denzel lost his Mother, I’m sure this moment brings back so many fond memories of her. God bless him,” another comment read.

Denzel Washington’s mother was an avid worshipper and worked as a beautician while running several salons in the New York suburb of Mount Vernon. She passed away in June 2021 at 97. The Gladiator 2 star once broke down in tears while eulogizing his mother on a TV show.
