Tennis superstar Serena Williams caused a stir online this week with her newly made golden hairstyle.
The new style attracted mixed reactions from both admirers and those who thought the hairdo “was over the top.”
Williams posted the hairdo on her Instagram account in support of Olympic gold for the U.S. women’s gymnastics team. Wearing a little black, she posted photos of herself against a backdrop that matched her new look.
“Trying to look golden for my ladies in gymnastics… I am loving every minute of watching you be great,” she captioned the photo, tagging members of the women’s gymnastics team.
Simone Biles, Sunisa Lee, Jordan Childs, Jade Carey, and Hezley Rivera are members of the women’s gymnastics team, ranked as “the most dominant” in Olympic history.
The post from Williams was to urge them to secure more medals, but it brought a few trolls, as some fans attempted to denigrate the new outlook. Other followers, however, jumped quickly to her defense.
“All the things she accomplished in life, and she’s still not happy inside. Take that wig off and be proud of your natural beauty,” one of her critics wrote. “Why did you change your beautiful face?” another added.
Those who supported the style also turned out in droves on Instagram to express their admiration, churning out hundreds of heart and fire emojis.
“Good to see u healthy!..“Love the hairdo. “Your hair has been everything lately…“Your glam team is killing it, u look amazing,” some of her admirers wrote.
Williams has had many hairstyles through the years, but there has not been such an outpouring of both love and scorn for her outlook.
When she launched her makeup line, WYN Beauty, she was bombarded with accusations of skin bleaching and cosmetic surgery.
Recently, her sister, Venus Williams, also caused a stir online when she was spotted with her male partner while cooling off along a beach in Italy.
