Former Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr. is making a comeback as Doctor Doom in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) for a movie dubbed Avengers: Doomsday.
He is not the only one coming back to the MCU, Movie directors, and producers Joe and Anthony Russo are also returning to direct that movie as they also return to Marvel.
The two next “Avengers” films, “Avengers: Secret Wars” and “Doomsday,” which will include Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom, will be directed by the Russo brothers.
Although Downey has stated previously that he was open to rejoining Marvel, fans believed it meant he would return as Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man. But fans were completely taken aback by Downey’s reappearance as the evil Victor von Doom, even the boisterous crowd at Marvel’s San Diego Comic-Con presentation.
However, sources within the MCU have also hinted that Downey will be playing an evil variant of Tony Stark who has now changed to Doctor Doom.
On Saturday night, Downey triumphantly showed up in Hall H to announce his return. “Same mask, new task,” Downey told the audience from the stage.
After starring in Iron Man (2008), Downey Jr. expanded his MCU oeuvre to include 10 films: Avengers, Iron Man 2, Iron Man 3, The Incredible Hulk, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.
In the 2019 film Avengers: Endgame, the 59-year-old actor played a man who gave his life in order to vanquish Thanos and preserve the universe
When Jonathan Majors was fired from the MCU after his domestic abuse trial and conviction last year, the studio decided to rename the film Avengers: Doomsday, which was formerly known as The Kang Dynasty.
