It took fortitude for Tina Turner to come clean about the abuse she had experienced throughout her marriage to Ike Turner in the beginning.
Turner was in the process of redefining herself at the time of the interview, taking on a new style and voice that would ultimately change the course of her career.
The interview took place five years after she split from Ike and just as she was getting ready for a Rolling Stones tour.
Additionally, this occurred three years before her significant resurgence with the 1984 release of her breakthrough solo album, Private Dancer.
The world is still enthralled by every aspect of the life of the iconic Tina Turner, even a year after her passing.
The 1981 interview with People magazine, in which the late Grammy-winning singer offered insights into her spiritual views and experiences, resurfaced amid all the news about the celebrity assault.
Tina revealed the sad reality that underlay the wildly famous marriage to Ike.
She gave a scathing account of their marriage, claiming that she was beaten with a shoe stretcher when she was pregnant and that on their wedding night, they were forced to witness a live sex act in a brothel.
“I was terrified of that man, like crazy. I felt obligated to stay there, and I was afraid. Even after he beat me up, I didn’t want to hurt him”.
She also talked about how Ike had beaten her with a coat hanger and thrown hot coffee at her. She also disclosed that she even attempted to end her own life.
“I was afraid to speak out about the abuse because of what I would get from Ike,” she told Carl Arrington.
