Sonequa Martin-Green may not be the first female or black lead, but she is valuing her contribution as the first black female captain of Star Trek.

In the legendary Star Trek series, the actress plays Michael Burnham in Star Trek: Discovery.

In an interview with People, Sonequa responded that the breakthrough role had altered her life when asked how the show had affected her.

“I have strong feelings about it right now, so it’s incredibly difficult for me to respond to that question.”

When asked how being on the show has impacted her career, during the SCAD TVFest in Atlanta on February 8, she responded, “I’m going to feel even differently five years from now. And because I know there’s more to come from it, it’s difficult for me to describe how it’s impacted me.”

Sonequa claimed that, as a result of playing the lead, she has learned to recognize and value a new level of “worth”.

“…And that was facilitated by the story and by playing Michael Burnham. Then, by the connections that I’ve made with the people that tell this story. These are the kinds of relationships that will have an impact on you for the rest of your life.”

Sonequa has no intention of stopping and stated that there is still space for further personal development.

“It has meant a great deal to stand in this position and to have, in a way, grown to fit the position. I’m still growing to fit it. It’s like, on one hand, I understand that I don’t need to do that. But then at the same time, it’s like that position is greater than me, so I’ll just always be growing into it.”

The Walking Dead alum became emotional at the idea of being able to show her son one day. Giving him a chance to see her star as a black lead. He hasn’t seen it yet,” said Sonequa.

“I could cry talking about what I will be able to teach them and lead by example and how I might be able to teach them from my experience. Also how they might benefit from it. “That sums everything up perfectly,” the mother of two said.
